The artist Maria Grazia Rosin presents Ice Virux 2732: From ice to Glass
A scientific publication of 2009 about the first core drilling operations in the Arctic ice pack by Professor Carlo Barbante served as the inspiration for the exhibition titled Ice Virux 2732 by Maria Grazia Rosin, currently on display in room L3 of the Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti.
With this exhibition, the artist also invites us to reflect, as she imagines that frozen, semi-active prehistoric viruses could be found in the deepest layers of Arctic pack ice, originating in outer space and which probably arrived on earth with falling asteroids. These micro-organisms could be reactivated with unforeseeable consequences during ice melting. Based on this science fiction fantasy, the artist gives life to a swarm of evanescent sidereal creatures, a kind of crystal snowfall.
The hand-blown glass works were made in Murano in collaboration with master glass blower Sergio Tiozzo, and their colour code is opaline, bronzed yellow, faint blue and white. They are fitted with reflecting metals and applications in burnt silver leaf applications. Maria Grazia Rosin has dedicated herself to glass for many years: born in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where she attended the Art Institute, and Venetian by adoption, she has been working with master glassblowers since 1993, creatively experimenting with this element which for its transparency and pliability is the most similar to ice.
Her works are part of international museum collections, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musèe des Arts Dècoratifs in Paris, the Museo del Vetro in Venice, the IMA Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, The Lake St-Louis Historical Society in Montreal, Quebec in Canada, the Corning Museum of Glass, NY USA, the Coral Spring Museum of Art in Florida USA, the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf in Germany, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Stewart Collection in Montreal Canada, Ernsting Stiftung Foundation at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark, La Biennale at Ca Giustinian Venice, and MAA Museo Municipal de Arte en Vidrio in Madrid.
