The Great War Ski Tour

The Great War Ski Tour is an 80 km long trip back in time on skis to witness the dramatic events of World War 1 in the Dolomites as it develops along the military front and follows historical First World War sites winding beneath the most beautiful Dolomite peaks.
In winter, you can do the entire ski route in one day: ski buses, slopes and lifts create a ring touching the Giau Pass, the Falzarego Pass, the Badia Valley, Arabba and Alleghe, completely skirting the Col di Lana. It is a spectacular route, suitable for everyone, winding around the bases of the most famous peaks.

In no other place, there are so many memories concentrated as in the Cortina Delicious area, which comprehends Mt. Lagazuoi and the 5 Torri, where you can see the restored emplacements of the open-air museums.

At the 5 Torri (Five Towers), you can see the Italian trenches. From the terraces of the refuges, you can enjoy splendid views of the Col di Lana, the Tofana di Rozes, the Castelletto and the Col dei Bos.

At the Falzarego Pass, you can go up to the top of Mt. Lagazuoi by cable car and reach the highest point of the Ski Tour: 2732 metres.

On your way up with the cable car, you can see the loopholes of the Italian mine tunnel and the Tre Sassi Fort on the road to the Valparola Pass.
The Austrian emplacement Feldwache 4 (FW 4) on Mt. Lagazuoi is the only emplacement on the front line that can be reached on skis by turning right directly after the departure of the slope at the top station of the Lagazuoi cable car Lagazuoi. It was dug into the ridge, called Muraglia Rocciosa by the Italians: a rock wall fortified by the Austro-Hungarian soldiers to defend the Lagazuoi saddle. This emplacement is a tunnel dug into the rock with two armoured emplacements for machine guns and two embrasures for the observation of the areas Col dei Bos and Castelletto. Today, there is a reproduction of the Schwarzlose machine gun.
On the western slope of the ridge, you can see the recesses dug into the rock for the Austro-Hungarian huts.

Then you descend the Armentarola slope in one of the most stunning environments of the Dolomites. At the bottom, a horse-drawn tow takes the skiers to the slopes of the ski area of the Badia Valley, where they proceed to Arabba, Padon and Marmolada.

ACCESS POINTS

From the Falzarego Pass to the 5 Torri
If you follow the Tour in an anticlockwise direction, you can reach the slopes of the 5 Torri from Falzarego on skis. From here, you can first take the modern four-seater chair lift to the Scoiattoli refuge and then the second lift to the Averau saddle.
You then go down the Fedare slope to the homonymous refuge, where a shuttle service links with Pescul and the Civetta, and the continuation of the Tour.

From Badia
You can start from the Alta Badia with a paid taxi bus leaving from the Hotel Armentarola and stopping at the Falzarego pass. At the pass, you can take the cable car to the top of Mt. Lagazuoi. From there, you descend along the Lagazuoi slope to reach the Col Gallina lift and thence the 5 Torri chair lift, continuing the Tour in the direction of the Giau Pass.

From the Civetta
The 5 Torri ski area can be reached counter-clockwise with the shuttle buses (on payment) departing from Pescul in the Civetta ski area. Then take the Fedare chairlift to the Averau saddle, descend the Fedare piste, and turn right to the Croda Negra chairlift, which leads to a small saddle, the starting point of the Croda Negra slope. This beautiful panoramic piste leads first to Col Gallina and then to the Falzarego pass, where you take the Lagazuoi cable car. On Mt. Lagazuoi you can visit the emplacement FW 4 and then descend on the Armentarola slope to the Val Badia.

Connections with the Cortina ski area

The 2-way Cortina Skyline gondola lift connects the ski areas to the right of Cortina d'Ampezzo: on the one side, Socrepes, Pocol and Tofana, and on the other side, 5 Torri, Averau, Falzarego and Lagazuoi. It runs from Son dei Prade (Pocol, at the bottom of the Tofana di Mezzo area) via the intermediate station Cianzopè to the Bai de Dones top station (at the bottom of the 5 Torri area), connecting these two areas with a 15-minute gondola ride. Now, skiers from Cortina can reach the 5 Torri, the Falzarego Pass and Mount Lagazuoi on skis by means of lift facilities and slopes. Even directly from Cortina d'Ampezzo, with the Freccia nel Cielo cable car.
